Cool Names

Five years ago, America’s leading baby-name experts, Pamela Redmond Satran and Linda Rosenkrantz, wrote a hip little book to answer the question they were asked most frequently: “What are the cool names?” Cool marches on, so it’s time for a fresh new look at the latest trends, including:
• Little Caesars: Led by celebrities (from Daniel Baldwin’s Atticus to Julia Roberts’s Phinnaeus), Latinate boys’ names are hot, hot, hot

• Scarlet Ladies: Sexy siren names, from Lola

I just received this lovely book and was delighted to see that it was not the typical baby name book–I collect name books for research and writing–.

This is a well thought-out book with a lot of interesting, traditional, trendy and ethnic names for any new parent to marvel in and find a name for their baby. This book would make a great present for expecting parents. I highly recommend it it is definitely a lovely book and a keepsake at that.

I am looking for more unusual names and this book delivers names, alas it does not include pronunciation. I specifically purchased this title because pronunciation was mentioned in the description – but it is not included in the edition I received. I would return the book if shipping were not near half of my anticipated refund.

I also purchased The Best Exotic Baby Names in the same order and that title is much more useful for my needs.

We bought this book and the Baby Name Wizard. We were looking for a name that is not super common but wouldn’t get the “huh” response all the time. This book is not for you if that is the kind of name you want. If you want to look up all the crazy strange names you have never heard of and you want to make sure no one else picks the same name as you, then buy this book. Also, this book did have more ethnically diverse names than probably most others out there. If you want a “normal” name then get something else like the Baby Name Wizard.

I bought the first edition when I was pregnant with our first child and found her name within the strange and weird. Our second daughters name came for the first edition as well. These names are WELL beyond the Jacobs and Emilys we know at least 15 each of. There are the strangest of the strange, Zell, and beautifully normal, Audrey and Wyatt. This book will definitely let you decide what you DO NOT want to name your child as well as what you could live with.

Out of all of the baby name books that I went through, this was one that stands out. It does have a lot of trendy names in there but that’s part of the point of the book. If you’re looking for more traditional names, there are tons of books that will do that for you. This one can point you in directions that you might not have thought of and I think that’s a good thing. It’s easy to read and the organization make it more entertaining to get through (you don’t have to go through lists and lists of names in alphabetical order). Don’t get me wrong, I think books with lists of names are useful but sometimes sheer quantity is not what you need.

On a side note, a great web resource is the Baby Name Wizard. Loved how that site charts the popularity of names over time and puts it into an easy to read format. I got the book by the same guys and it’s okay. It just seems like another baby name book with lists of names. The website presents the information in a much better format in my opinion.

I almost didn’t pick up this book in the bookstore. I mean, I figure any book that actually gives itself the moniker of “cool” would by default NOT be cool, right? Plus, there are tons of free website with lists of names, so why would I need to buy a book? But I started thumbing through it, showed it to my husband and we decided it was exceptional enough to buy it.

The book is grouped into categories, and sure, some of them are a little unusual. We aren’t the types to name our kids after a video game character or a supermodel, but some of the other categories were right up our alley. I especially loved the suggestions for taking an ordinary name and tweaking it slightly to make it more unusual or exotic. Great idea! This book also reminded me of names I hadn’t thought about in years, many of which I hadn’t seen on the “free” websites.

All in all, definitely worth checking out if you are stumped for names and want something that not half the other kids in preschool will have.

Just when you think the whole spectrum has been covered… Satran proves us wrong again with her revised and updated cool names. With something for everyone, food for thought, and so much more than just a list of what’s hot, Satran has once again proved to be THE authority on baby names. Don’t bother looking anywhere else.. Everything you need, want, and more (for all types of parents-to-be) is in this edition.

I used the first edition for my first two kids, the second edition for my third. It is a fun book. Some of the names in it are laughable but some are perfect. Names you have never heard of to names that you have but aren’t so common. The lists are interesting to read through. For those who don’t want their child to be the 5th “Madison” in their class at school.
